What is the Big Gig Bangkok & Teacher Tour 2025?

The Big Gig

The Big Gig Bangkok 2025 is a two-day event hosted by Musical Futures International & Music Teachers In International Schools (MTIIS) that brings together a global community of teachers to shape the future of music education. Now in its 3rd year, the Big Gig Bangkok has become an exciting space for music educators to connect, learn, share and dream. The event is hosted at St. Andrews International School, in the heart of Bangkok. As is the norm for Musical Futures-style PD, we will play, sing, compose, arrange, produce, scratch, loop, rap and improvise our way through two days of completely practical workshops. What will you learn at the Big Gig?

  • Explore informal and aural learning pedagogies that work beautifully in all international school contexts.

  • Explore current trends in Music Technology & production, such as sequencing, synthesis, sampling and using electronic devices as instruments  that will directly assist in PYP, MYP, IBDP and British curriculum courses.

  • Gather ideas for developing a contemporary and progressive curriculum that engages learners of all ages and prepares students to become 21st Century Musicians.

  • Improve student (and teacher) confidence with improvising, soloing and composing through our tried and tested approaches to classroom workshopping.

  • Get a one year subscription to our huge collection of brand new online resources to support fun, engaging and creative music making in your school.

  • Be involved in practical and relevant workshops for primary/elementary and secondary, led by experienced international school music educators who truly understand this unique context.

The Teacher Tour

The teacher tour provides a life-changing opportunity to explore the world of music education in international schools and meet like-minded music educators. It's also a chance to share ideas, best practice, and resources with some amazing people. Plus, Bangkok is home to some incredible schools with students attending from all over the world. This year is set to be the biggest year yet for the teacher tour!

Here's the plan:

Wednesday March 26th:
Join in for a morning visit to
St. Andrews International School primary campus in town and then on to another international school (TBC) in the outskirts of Bangkok. Lunch and transport from the Jasmine Hotel included.

Thursday March 27th:
Catch the BTS a.k.a the light rail train and the local ferry (both at own cost, but mega cheap!) for a morning visit to
Shrewsbury International School, Bangkok Riverside. Here we will take part in a traditional Thai music workshop taught using an aural and informal approach by the expert Thai classical ensemble at the school. Then, we will watch a Musical Futures-style lesson facilitated with a secondary music class. You will have the option of joining for a beautiful Thai lunch, or heading off on your own to explore the streets and sights of Bangkok in the afternoon!

Friday March 28th:
Day 1 of the Big Gig begins! Join with a massive crew of music educators working in schools throughout the wider Asian region. You will meet teachers working in Malaysia, Singapore, The Philippines, India, China, Japan and beyond. In the evening we will hit the town for drinks and delicious local food and then see where the night goes! Full details about the workshops will be shared with you closer to the event, but you can read below for a summary of some of the experiences.

Saturday March 29th:
Day 2 of the Big Gig will be action-packed. More info on the workshop schedule to come! There will be an optional evening meal/drinks in the evening to celebrate the end of the tour :)

An immersive, practical and inspiring four days!

What people say about the Big Gig

"A great weekend of focused learning that was still very fun and applicable to a real world music classroom - highly recommended"
Sean - AOBA Tokyo

"The Big Gig was nothing short of absolutely spectacular fun! Two days spent exploring, tinkering, playing music and sharing ideas felt remarkably therapeutic, offering a respite from the demands of our daily teaching routines. The experience of simply playing music alongside fellow music educators provided an invaluable opportunity for rejuvenation and connection whilst reinforcing the significance of fostering a supportive community within the realm of music education. A big thank you to the Musical Futures International team for the incredible resources they left us with and a revitalising reminder of the intrinsic rewards of being a music educator"
Rozelle - Oberoi International School - JVLR Campus

"This was my second Big Gig and was most enjoyable. I travelled from Australia to attend and wasn’t disappointed. It reinforced my confidence in my practical teaching pedagogy. Thank you. Loved it!
Melissa - Australian Music Conservatory

"The whole event was massive fun! We were fully engaged in practical music-making right from the start and it carried on throughout. My favourite takeaway from the event was how it opened up a new world of teaching for me - I had never considered using technology in that fashion before and it gave a whole new avenue to teach musical concepts that also engages the children's interests. It also gave a way to make music-making more accessible and inclusive to those who have SEN or physical disabilities that would otherwise stop them from engaging with the work"
Tom - St. Andrews Sathorn

"I found the weekend to be an ideal combination of music making, theoretical information, immersion with pop pedagogy and technology, and time to network with other teachers who also are interested in making music learning more relevant, interesting, and creative"
Matthew - Education University of Hong Kong.
